Driving in Japan is Easy

Driving in Japan is Easy, but there are a few things you may want to know.

So, you’ve decided to go road tripping in Japan. Good for you!

Road tripping is such an amazing way to travel across Japan. You get to drive along scenic roads, explore new towns, and meet new people. But before you do that, you should know that the driving rules in Japan are different than in Western countries.

Here are five things you should keep in mind while driving in Japan.

Stop at ALL train tracks

In Japan, drivers are legally required to completely stop their vehicles and look left and right before crossing a train track.

Pedestrians and bicycles have the right of way

The right of way is always given to pedestrians and bicycles.

Do NOT turn at any red lights

Vehicles are not allowed to turn when the light is red. However, vehicles are permitted to pass when the red light is flashing. When this is the case, the right of way is always given to pedestrians and bicycles.

Drive on the LEFT side of the road

Drivers should stay on the left side even if there aren’t any lanes unless they are trying to get past another vehicle.

Drinking and Driving is prohibited

Drinking and driving is a serious offense regardless of the alcohol content. As long as you have consumed alcohol, you are not permitted to drive.
