Things To Know Before You Get On The Road (Part 1)

Many people come to Japan with preconceived expectations. However, there are actually many niche details that visitors often overlook in their trip planning. Before you even get into roadtrip 101, here are five things you should know before you get on the road in the land of the rising sun.

1. Cash

In Japan, the primary way of paying for things is in cash. Many people visiting the country are surprised to find that places that take credit card are few and far between. Keeping cash on you is probably your best bet in this country. If you need to withdraw money, you can find an ATM machine at any 7/11 location. They take most credit card providers.

2. Wifi

Individuals that come to Japan expect to find wifi wherever they go; however, that is actually quite false. Public wifi is not as common as you may think. Therefore, getting a SIM card or a portable wifi will be a better option for you.

3. Learning Japanese

It is actually fairly common to find yourself in an area of Japan that speaks no English. Many Japanese individuals will only understand their native language, so learning some key Japanese phrases before your trip would be very beneficial.

4. Tipping

In various countries across the globe, it’s standard practice to tip waiters after a meal. However,  in Japan, it is actually very rude. In order to avoid offending someone, you should refrain from leaving extra cash and instead vocalize how much you appreciate and enjoyed your experience.

5. Eating On The Go

Walking and eating in Japan is surprisingly discouraged.  If you catch yourself accidentally snacking on the go, you may get some funny looks. If you need to have food or drink on the street, the best way to handle the situation is to stand off to the side, eat, and then continue on your way.
